As the crisp air of winter settles in and the world slows under a blanket of snow, I find myself reflecting on a journey that began just a few months ago – a journey into the warm and welcoming world of Toastmasters.
I joined Toastmasters in September, after years of wanting to take this step. I first heard about the club back in 2006 when I first started working at Fluor, and ever since, the idea lingered like a distant goal. Life, as it often does, placed other priorities in my path. But this year, I decided it was time to embrace my long-standing wish: to grow more comfortable and have fun with public speaking.
Before joining, I often attended meetings as a guest. Watching people speak with such confidence and ease, sometimes even making it look fun, was what truly drew me in. I remember thinking, “If they can do it, I can too.” That spark of inspiration eventually became the push I needed to become a member myself.
Even in this short time, the experience has been nothing short of wonderful. Walking into a room filled with people who share similar aspirations, some seasoned speakers, others just starting out, felt welcoming and energizing. The environment is supportive, encouraging, and full of positive energy. It’s a place where growth feels natural and where every speech is met with warmth.
Delivering my first speech was a moment I’ll always cherish. Standing in front of such an attentive and supportive audience, I felt a mix of nerves and excitement, but most of all, gratitude. Gratitude for the smiles, the applause, and the welcoming atmosphere that Toastmasters creates.
Getting there wasn’t without its challenges. In the beginning, the thought of speaking in front of others felt intimidating. Instead of letting fear take over, I took a step back and reminded myself why I joined. Before stepping onto the podium, I repeated a simple statement: “This is not about being perfect; it’s about trying, learning, and having fun while doing it.” That reminder turned nervous energy into excitement and allowed me to enjoy the process rather than spiral into what-ifs. It helped me breathe, focus, and remember why I chose to be here, to grow, have fun, embrace the learning opportunity, and enjoy the journey.
As I continue this path, I look forward to crafting more speeches, learning from others, and celebrating every small victory. Toastmasters has shown me that growth happens when we challenge ourselves and that confidence is built one step at a time.
So, here’s to many more speeches and shared stories ahead!
