When I first joined Toastmasters, I came for one reason, to communicate better with my colleagues & friends. I was not sure if that will be possible for a person like me. I was struggling to organize my speech before my colleagues. But what I didn’t realize was that Toastmasters would become more than a public speaking club. It would become a mirror reflecting who I am, and who I could be.
During my Ice-breaking speech, my voice trembled, and my brain forgot the English language for a few seconds. I thought, “Public speaking isn’t for me.”
But then came the warm smiles, the encouraging applause, and that one magical phrase – “You are doing great for your first speech!”
That’s when I realized – Toastmasters isn’t about perfection. It’s about progress.
Every speech since then became a small experiment in making it perfect.
I learned to pause instead of panic, to smile instead of rush, and to connect instead of impress.
But the biggest transformation came when I started listening to others.
Looking at others nail their perfect speech taught me to listen deeply, observe carefully, and communicate thoughtfully, skills that extend far beyond the meeting room.
Today, when I stand here, I don’t see a nervous beginner anymore.
I see someone who has failed, practiced, and grown – with the help of mentors, evaluators, and those little green/amber lights telling me my time is up!
At work, I became more composed during presentations and calmer during conflicts.
As a team member or a leader, I learned that communication isn’t just about speaking alone it’s about listening carefully.
Toastmasters didn’t just polish my words – it reshaped my mindset.
It taught me that leadership isn’t about having authority; it’s about creating an environment where others feel heard, valued, and empowered. So, to anyone still finding their voice – remember, Toastmasters isn’t a stage; it’s a journey.
A journey where every stumble is a lesson, every evaluation a mirror, every applause a reminder that you’re becoming not just a better speaker, but a better version of yourself.
