When Ola asked me to write about my experience with the International Speech Contest, I hesitated. I had never been interested in contests—let alone international ones. When I joined Toastmasters, my only goal was to improve my speaking skills, not to compete. But after some thought, I decided to step out of my comfort zone and sign up.
This was my first time competing, and even though I knew I
wouldn’t be able to attend the area contest due to a scheduling
conflict, I still went for it. I can’t tell you how much of a blessing that
decision was! Generally, when I write a speech, I focus more on the
content than the delivery. But this time, I paid extra attention to
how different contestants brought their A-game.
What I Learned
I started studying their techniques with a newfound intensity:
- How speakers used pauses for dramatic effect
- The power of strategic body language
- Ways to create an emotional connection with the audience
I even began watching YouTube speakers more closely, analyzing their gestures and delivery. Suddenly, public speaking wasn’t just about words—it was an art form of communication and connection.
Why Compete?
Competing isn’t just about winning. It’s about:
- Stretching yourself beyond perceived limitations
- Stepping outside your comfort zone
- Growing in ways you never expected
When we participate in contests, we gain invaluable experience. We sharpen our skills, build confidence, and learn the nuanced techniques that transform a good speech into an unforgettable one.
To Those on the Sidelines
If you’re wondering, “Is a contest right for me?”—I encourage you to take the leap! You don’t have to be the best speaker to compete; you just have to be willing to grow. The experience itself will make you stronger, more confident, and yes—perhaps even an inch taller.
So go for it, and surprise yourself!
